What is The Hero With A Modern Face?

Welcome to my new blog! I'm Alex Greenwood, a writer and storyteller from Finland. I hope you enjoy this new blog, which I started to learn more about storytelling and mythology myself. Hopefully I can inspire, maybe even help someone else to learn.

I've been a storyteller for my whole life. That means I'm willing to try every form of storytelling. Novels, videogames, movies, etc. I'm certainly a consumer of these all. To me, they're more than entertainment. They're stories. A story is food for our soul. The best stories are those that nourish us years after hearing them.

This blog is about modern mythology. I'll be dealing with pop culture, as well as classics. If you've ever rooted for Batman stopping The Joker from poisoning Gotham's water supply, or suffered with Frodo on his journey to Mount Doom, this blog is for you. These are the Heroes With A Modern Face.

Why this blog?

We're living a historical time. The current COVID crisis will start this new decade of not-so-golden-twenties. It will be a dark decade with global depression. We all need inspiration and hope in our lives. I hope this blog will give that.

There will be lots and LOTS about superheroes. Not least, because I'm writing a book about them (which I'll be talking about later), but because they are a huge and important part of today's western culture.

As the title suggests, my inspiration was Joseph Campbell's book ”Hero With a Thousand Faces”. It opens up the common elements and themes in all the worlds mythologies, calling it ”The Monomyth”. The book is important, probably one of the most important, books about storytelling. It's inspired Star Wars, Harry Potter and countless other epic stories, such as Lord of The Rings.

My goal is to have a more modern take on Campbell's classic, doing the same thing to our modern myths as Campbell did to classics. I will deal with any and all inspirational mythology. Anything that inspires our time. Hope it inspires you as well.

See you on the pages!

-Alex
